Quick answer
Three things decide a Black Friday Google Ads result for a Shopify store: purchase tracking that counts order value, a Merchant Center feed with promotions and sale prices submitted early, and budgets that can follow demand without the bid strategy holding them back. Set those up this week, submit promotions at least 24 hours before the sale, and change as little as possible on the day.
Key takeaways
- Black Friday is November 27, 2026 and Cyber Monday is November 30, 2026; Merchant Center needs promotions mapped to products 24 hours before they start and can take up to 72 hours to review them, so submit them the week before, not the night before.
- Submit the sale with sale_price and sale_price_effective_date together, keep the regular price in the price attribute, and include a time zone, or Google reads the dates as UTC and the sale starts hours early.
- A Google Ads campaign can spend up to 2 times its average daily budget on one day and 30.4 times it in a month, and since June 1, 2026 pacing aims for that full monthly amount even on a reduced ad schedule.
- Use a seasonality adjustment for the sale days only (Google suggests events of 1 to 7 days) and make no structural changes in the last two weeks, because a new campaign or bid strategy can sit in a Learning status for up to 7 days.
- Since August 26, 2026 Shopify no longer runs app script tags on the Order status page of non-Plus stores, so purchase tracking must come from the Google & YouTube app or a web pixel, confirmed with a test order before the sale.

What decides a Black Friday Google Ads result for a Shopify store?
Three things decide it: purchase tracking that records the value of every order, a Merchant Center feed with promotions and sale prices submitted before the sale starts, and budgets that can follow demand without the bid strategy holding them back. Every item in this checklist protects one of those three.
The dates for 2026: Thanksgiving is Thursday, November 26, Black Friday is Friday, November 27, and Cyber Monday is Monday, November 30. This checklist assumes a Merchant Center feed connected through the Google & YouTube app and campaigns already running; if you are still building that, start with the Merchant Center setup guide.
Two 2026 changes make older guides wrong in places: since June 1, 2026, Google Ads paces every campaign toward its full monthly limit of 30.4 times the daily budget even on a reduced ad schedule, and since August 26, 2026, Shopify no longer runs app script tags on the Order status page of non-Plus stores.
What is the week-by-week timeline from now to Cyber Monday?
Work backward from Friday, November 27. Merchant Center needs promotions mapped to products 24 hours before they start and can take up to 72 hours to review them, and Smart Bidding can show a Learning status for up to 7 days after a structural change. So the last safe day for structural changes is about November 13, and the last day to submit promotions is about November 23.
| Week | Merchant Center | Google Ads | Store |
|---|---|---|---|
| Oct 26 to Nov 1 (this week) | Clear Needs attention; prices and availability match the site; add new products | Test order; last year's sale-week data; break-even ROAS at the sale price | Update shipping, returns and holiday cutoff pages |
| Nov 2 to Nov 8 | Build promotions (Shopify discounts or the promotion builder); schedule sale prices with an effective date | Draft sale ads and countdowns; promotion assets; remarketing lists; negative keywords | Test checkout under load; decide on codes or automatic discounts |
| Nov 9 to Nov 15 | Confirm the return policy in Merchant Center matches the site | Last day for new campaigns or bid strategy changes is November 13; plan budget steps | Freeze theme and landing page changes |
| Nov 16 to Nov 22 | Submit promotions; confirm Approved status; preview sale prices | Seasonality adjustment for November 26 to 30; budgets step one; sale ads through review | Check stock against the forecast |
| Nov 23 to Nov 30 | Sale prices switch on by effective date; check promotion and product status daily | Budgets at peak from November 25; watch hourly; no structural changes | Watch uptime and order flow |
| Dec 1 to Dec 13 | End or extend promotions; sale prices end by date | Return targets over 1 to 2 conversion cycles; review search terms; remarket to new orders | Shipping cutoffs for December delivery |
Merchant Center checklist: promotions, sale prices, feed and policies
Merchant Center is where the sale becomes visible in Shopping ads and free listings: the struck-through price, the offer link and the deal badge all come from data you submit ahead of time, and Google reviews each of them.
Promotions
Promotions are a Merchant Center add-on for Shopping ads, local inventory ads and free listings that adds an offer link such as "15% off" to your products. Google reviews each promotion for policy and product mapping, typically within 24 hours of its start time and up to 72 hours, and the mapping between products and the promotion must be complete 24 hours before the start date, per Google's Get started with Promotions page.
- Turn on the Promotions add-on under Settings, then Add-ons, if it is not already on
- Shopify stores: create the discount in Shopify, open it, choose Manage under Sales channels, and publish it to the Google & YouTube channel. Discount codes and automatic discounts sync; free shipping offers, buy X get Y, collection discounts and discounts without an end date do not (Google's Shopify promotions page)
- Anything the sync cannot carry goes in through the promotion builder or a promotions data source
- Meet the minimums: at least $5 or 5% off; state the floor of a range ("10% to 30% off", because "up to 30% off" is rejected unless it is an event promotion); free shipping needs a redemption code unless it is combined with another discount
- Give every promotion an end date within 183 days of its start and name the product type in the title ("20% off running shoes", not "20% off select items"), per Google's promotions best practices
- Submit by November 23 at the latest, and check the status column reads Approved before Thanksgiving
Sale price and sale price effective date
Submit the sale with two attributes. sale_price carries the discounted price and sale_price_effective_date carries the start and end as an ISO 8601 range with times and a time zone. Keep the regular price in the price attribute, because Google needs both to show the price difference. Without an effective date, the sale price applies the moment the feed updates (sale_price, sale_price_effective_date).
2026-11-26T18:00-0500/2026-11-30T23:59-0500- The sale price must be lower than the price, the landing page must show both prices, and checkout must show only the sale price
- If the discount needs a code, the code must be available to everyone who visits, and the page must show both prices after the code is applied
- Without a time, the range starts at midnight and ends at 11:59 PM; without a time zone, Google assumes UTC, which starts an East Coast sale five hours early
- Shopify's Google & YouTube app syncs the price your store shows, so schedule the sale price with an effective date rather than changing prices on the day
Deal badge: As of October 2026, Google's experimental Deal Ends annotation puts "3 days left" under the price in Shopping ads when a product has both sale_price and sale_price_effective_date. From October 15 to January 5 it needs at least 10% off, the lowest effective price for that item in the last 60 days, an end date within 7 days, and 60 days since the item's last badge (Google's Deal Ends page). A badge earned on an early-November deal rules the same product out for Black Friday.
Feed freshness and inventory
Google's own pre-event checklist for Merchant Center is mostly about timing: a new feed can take up to 72 hours to crawl, new products should go in 3 to 5 business days before the event but no earlier than 30 days, and an item switched to in_stock can take up to 24 hours to show.
- Clear every item under Needs attention, and add any new sale products this week
- Availability in the feed must match the landing page and checkout; a mismatch is a disapproval, so turn on automatic item updates (availability attribute)
- When a product sells out, let it go to out_of_stock rather than deleting it; an offer added back after deletion takes a long time to show again
- Closing the warehouse over Thanksgiving: do not mark products out_of_stock, use the excluded_destination attribute, and bring them back within 7 days, because products excluded from every destination for longer are deleted
Shipping, returns and holiday cutoffs
- Shipping settings carry handling time and transit time; Google extends the estimated delivery date by a day when either overlaps a national holiday, so raise handling days if the warehouse closes on Thanksgiving (shipping settings)
- If you extend the return window for gifts, change the returns page on the site and the return policy in Merchant Center; Google requires the two to match, the page to open without a login, and the policy to be its own page rather than a line in the FAQ (return policies, shipping and returns best practices)
- Free listings are on by default and carry promotions too, so the same work shows at no cost on Search, the Shopping tab, Maps, YouTube, Images and Lens (free listings)
Google Ads checklist: budgets, bidding, campaigns and assets
The job inside Google Ads is to spend into the demand without resetting what Smart Bidding has learned. Budget, target, creative and targeting changes take effect in the next auction and never trigger a Learning status; a new bid strategy, a change in which campaigns share a strategy, or a new conversion goal can show Learning for up to 7 days (Smart Bidding learning).
Budgets and pacing
A campaign can spend up to 2 times its average daily budget on any day and up to 30.4 times it in a calendar month (About spending limits). Since June 1, 2026, Google's pacing aims at that full monthly amount regardless of ad schedule: a campaign that runs on 20 days a month at $100 a day now paces toward $3,040, not $2,000, per Google's budget pacing change. Campaigns still never run on days the schedule turns off.
- Set the sale-window daily budget so the busiest day fits inside 2 times the budget: $1,000 of good spend on Black Friday needs at least a $500 daily budget that day
- Raise budgets in steps during the week before, not at midnight; a mid-month change paces the rest of the month at the new daily budget times the remaining calendar days
- Campaigns on a day-of-week schedule: recalculate the budget with the 2026 rule (the monthly total you want divided by 30.4), or remove the schedule for the sale window
- Google's holiday advice is to leave budgets uncapped during seasonal spikes; if you cannot, set the ceiling you can afford and watch the Limited by budget status
An illustrative plan for a store with a $5,000 base monthly budget across its campaigns (an example, not a benchmark):
| Period (illustrative) | Daily budget | Days | Planned spend | Note |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| October (base) | $164 | 31 | About $5,000 | $5,000 ÷ 30.4 |
| Nov 1 to 15 (early deals) | $197 (+20%) | 15 | $2,955 | Daily limit $394 |
| Nov 16 to 25 (ramp) | $247 (+50%) | 10 | $2,470 | Daily limit $494 |
| Nov 26 to 30 (Thanksgiving to Cyber Monday) | $411 (+150%) | 5 | $2,055 | Daily limit $822 |
| Dec 1 to 15 (gifts) | $230 (+40%) | 15 | $3,450 | Until the shipping cutoff |
| Dec 16 to 31 | $164 | 16 | $2,624 | Back to base |
November lands near $7,480, about 1.5 times the base month, with the five sale days carrying 27% of it; any single day can reach the daily limit in the last column.
Seasonality adjustments
A seasonality adjustment tells Smart Bidding to expect a conversion rate change for a short event. Google says to use it only when you expect a major change, because Smart Bidding already handles seasonal patterns, and that it suits events of 1 to 7 days and may not work well beyond 14 days. It is available for Search, Shopping, Demand Gen and Display campaigns on Target ROAS or Target CPA, and for Performance Max on any bid strategy (About seasonality adjustments).
- Compare last year's conversion rate on the sale days with the two weeks before; if the sale days converted 40% higher, schedule a +40% conversion rate adjustment for November 26 to 30 under Tools, Budgets and bidding, Adjustments, Seasonal (Create a seasonality adjustment)
- Scope it to the campaigns that carry the sale; bids return to normal after the end date without a negative adjustment
Target ROAS and Target CPA
Keep the strategy and adjust the target with care. Target ROAS wants at least 15 conversions in the past 30 days for Search and Shopping campaigns, and when you change a target the bidder reacts at once but needs 1 to 2 conversion cycles to settle (About Target ROAS bidding). Since August 17, 2026, a budget-limited campaign delivers toward its target instead of beating it, so a campaign that used to overachieve now lands near the number you typed (changes to target based bid strategies). The Target ROAS guide covers the setup in full.
- Recalculate break-even at the sale price. For example, a $100 product with $55 of variable costs has a 45% contribution margin and a break-even ROAS of 2.22x. At 25% off, the $75 price leaves $20, a 26.7% margin, and break-even rises to 3.75x. A discount raises the ROAS you need; the ROAS calculator runs your own numbers
- Set the window target once, a few days before the sale, and leave it; Google advises against several target changes within one conversion cycle
- Judge the window only after the conversion delay has passed, because late conversions make the sale days look weaker than they were
Performance Max
- No new Performance Max campaign after mid-November; Google asks for 2 to 3 weeks before you change a new one, so put sale creative into the asset groups that already have history (our Performance Max guide explains the structure)
- Add promotion assets to the campaign or asset group with the Black Friday occasion; campaign-level promotion assets override account-level ones (asset group setup)
- Avoid targeting the same products in a Standard Shopping campaign at the same time; Google says Performance Max takes priority over Standard Shopping for the same products
- Negative keywords in Performance Max apply to Search and Shopping inventory only (Performance Max negatives)
Search campaigns for brand and gift terms
- Add a brand ad group for your brand plus "black friday", "cyber monday", "sale" and "promo code", and gift ad groups ("gifts for runners", "gifts under $50"), now, so both are past Learning by sale week
- Write the sale ads early so review is done before the sale, then switch them on the evening of November 26
- Add negative keywords for sale-week junk such as competitor sale names, or "coupon" if you offer none; negatives account for casing and misspellings but not plurals or synonyms, so add both forms (About negative keywords)
Remarketing and first-party lists
- Build the segments now so they fill before the sale: site visitors from the last 30 days, people who added to cart without ordering, and past orders from your Shopify email list; the remarketing guide covers list setup and limits
- Use them as audience signals in Performance Max and as targeting in Demand Gen, with creative that names the offer and the end date
Countdown and promotion assets in ads
- Promotion assets (formerly promotion extensions) show under Search ads and on YouTube Shorts and in-stream ads, are free to add, and charge the same per click as the headline; pick the Black Friday or Cyber Monday occasion (eligible October 15 to December 15), enter the discount, any code and the sale page URL (About promotion assets)
- Occasion-specific promotion assets must be created or edited within 6 months of their start date, so last year's asset needs an edit, not a reactivation
- A countdown headline such as
Sale ends in {COUNTDOWN(2026-11-30 23:59:59,5)}counts down in the viewer's time zone and starts 5 days before the end date by default; the ad stops showing after the end date, so keep at least 3 headlines without a countdown and unpin it afterward (countdown customizers)
Tracking checklist: purchase value, enhanced conversions and a test order
Smart Bidding spends the sale budget on what the purchase conversion reports, so one wrong value does more damage in 5 days than in a quiet month. On Shopify the route Google recommends is the Google & YouTube app: when you link Google Ads it suggests purchase, add to cart and checkout started conversion actions, and Google's Shopify conversion tracking page says to set the app's purchase as primary and remove legacy tags to prevent duplicate measurement.
- Why this matters now: Shopify stopped running app script tags on the Order status page for Plus stores on August 28, 2025 and for all other stores on August 26, 2026, and points tracking to web pixels instead (Shopify developer docs); pixels load on the storefront, checkout, Thank you page and Order status page and run in a sandbox (Shopify pixels overview)
- Keep one primary purchase action with value and currency; leave add to cart and checkout started as secondary
- Turn on enhanced conversions in the app's Settings tab; it sends hashed first-party data with the conversion so more orders match back to ad clicks (About enhanced conversions)
- Place a test order this week on a low-priced product, confirm one purchase conversion arrives in Google Ads with the right value, then refund it; then compare a week of Google Ads purchases with Shopify orders from Google traffic, and fix any gap of more than a few percent before you raise budgets (the conversion tracking guide walks through both checks)
- If tracking breaks during the window, add a data exclusion for the affected clicks so Smart Bidding ignores those days while reporting keeps them (About data exclusions)
Site checklist: speed, stock, checkout and discount codes
Google's pre-event guidance for Merchant Center is mostly about the website: products can be disapproved if a landing page errors out or times out under load, and changes to how prices are displayed can cause temporary disapprovals while Google re-crawls the page.
- Confirm that checkout handles the expected peak, test speed with PageSpeed Insights, and freeze the theme for the window: no moving the price in the page code and no JavaScript-only price reveals
- Automatic discounts avoid the code-display rules above and, in the US, sync to Merchant Center as promotions
- If you expect to sell out, be ready to change promotion and sale end dates
- Never schedule maintenance in the window; if an outage is unavoidable, disable automatic item updates 24 hours before and use the excluded_destination attribute, as Google's planned outage page describes
What should you watch on Black Friday itself, and what should you leave alone?
On the day, the useful work is watching, not editing. Smart Bidding sets bids per auction, most changes made on the day land after the moment has passed, and conversion lag makes a slow morning look worse than it is.
Check every hour or two
- Spend against the daily limit and the Limited by budget status
- Promotion status and product disapprovals in Merchant Center
- Site uptime, checkout errors and page speed
- Google Ads purchases against Shopify orders for the same hours
- Search terms on the brand campaign for junk
- Stock on the products carrying the most spend
Leave alone until December
- The bid strategy type and conversion goals
- Targets, beyond the one change made before the sale
- Campaign structure, asset groups and portfolios
- Ad schedules and location settings
- Budgets cut over a quiet morning
- New campaigns of any kind
One change is safe on the day: if a campaign hits Limited by budget before noon and the orders behind it are profitable, raise the daily budget. The change applies at once, raises that day's limit, and does not trigger Learning.
What should you do after Cyber Monday?
- End or extend promotions on December 1; sale prices end by their effective date, so change site prices at the same moment, because a mismatch gets products disapproved
- Return targets to normal in one or two steps over 1 to 2 conversion cycles rather than one jump, and keep budgets up for gift demand until the shipping cutoff
- Let the seasonality adjustment end on its own; Google says no negative adjustment is needed afterward
- Pull sale-week search terms for new keywords and negatives, and note which products converted at the sale price
- Build a remarketing list of sale-week orders for a January offer
- Write down conversion rate by day against a normal week, spend against the daily limit, stockouts and approval timings; that record becomes next year's plan
Should someone check the account before the sale?
If you are unsure whether the feed, the tracking and the campaign structure are ready, a free Google Ads audit from Logical Gecko checks those three before the sale. It is a diagnosis: we tell you whether we found what is holding the account back and what we would change first. For stores that would rather hand the season off, our eCommerce Google Ads management runs this checklist through the holidays.
Frequently asked questions
When should you start Black Friday Google Ads?
Start the setup now and the spending the week before. Google's promotion assets accept the Black Friday and Cyber Monday occasions from October 15, Merchant Center promotions can be scheduled with a start date, and sale prices can carry an effective date range. The last safe day for structural changes, such as a new campaign or a new bid strategy, is about two weeks before the sale, because Smart Bidding can show a Learning status for up to 7 days.
Should you create a new Google Ads campaign for Black Friday?
Usually no. A new campaign or bid strategy triggers a Learning status of up to 7 days, and Google asks for 2 to 3 weeks before you judge a new Performance Max campaign. Add promotion assets, sale headlines and higher budgets to the campaigns that already have conversion history. The exception is a Search campaign for brand plus sale terms or gift terms, which you build now so it is settled by sale week.
How much should you raise your Google Ads budget for Black Friday?
Enough that your busiest day fits inside 2 times the average daily budget, because that is the most a campaign can spend on one day. Decide the most you want to spend on Black Friday, divide by 2, and set at least that as the daily budget for the sale window. Raise it in steps the week before. Google paces mid-month changes against the remaining calendar days, so a change made at midnight does not catch up for the day you already missed.
Do seasonality adjustments work for Black Friday?
Yes, for the sale days themselves. A seasonality adjustment tells Smart Bidding to expect a higher conversion rate for a short event, and Google says it suits events of 1 to 7 days and may not work well beyond 14 days. It applies to Search, Shopping, Demand Gen and Display campaigns on Target ROAS or Target CPA, and to Performance Max on any bid strategy. Base the percentage on last year's sale-day conversion rate against a normal week.
How do you show a sale price in Google Shopping ads?
Submit three attributes: price with the regular price, sale_price with the discounted price, and sale_price_effective_date with the start and end as an ISO 8601 range, for example 2026-11-26T18:00-0500/2026-11-30T23:59-0500. Google shows the sale price as the current price and may show the regular price struck through. Your landing page must show both prices, and checkout must show only the sale price, or the product is disapproved.
How long does a Merchant Center promotion take to be approved?
Google says the policy and product review is typically completed within 24 hours of the promotion's start time but can take up to 72 hours, and the mapping between products and the promotion must be complete 24 hours before the start date. Promotions must end within 183 days of starting. Submit Black Friday promotions in the week of November 16 and check that the status reads Approved before Thanksgiving.
Should you change Target ROAS during Black Friday?
Change it once, a few days before the sale, and leave it. Target changes take effect in the next auction and do not trigger a Learning status, but performance converges over 1 to 2 conversion cycles, and Google advises against several target changes within one cycle. Recalculate break-even first: a discount lowers revenue per order while costs stay, so the ROAS you need goes up, not down. After Cyber Monday, step the target back in one or two moves.
What should you do with Google Ads after Cyber Monday?
End or extend promotions on December 1, let sale prices expire by their effective date, and make sure site prices change at the same time, because a price mismatch gets products disapproved. Return targets to normal over 1 to 2 conversion cycles rather than in one jump, keep budgets up for gift demand until your shipping cutoff, pull new keywords and negatives from sale-week search terms, and build a remarketing list of sale-week orders for January.
